I found this novel breathtaking, funny, heartbreaking, beautiful. One of my favorites so far in '08.

A.M Homes and I have much in common, both being born in the 60s in Washington, D.C., and being relinquished for adoption. Her memoir pushed every button I have as a reunited adoptee, and our mothers have much in common. It was practically frightening to read. While it was mesmerizing to me, all those questions about identity--I'm not sure Every Reader will get it. The part that was an essay in The New Yorker is the most compelling reading. I confess I just didn't get the chapter that was nothing but a series of unanswered questions to her birthfather--even I found it self-indulgent.
