Uncle Whiskers
Edie on Uncle Whiskers

I think my uncle gave me this for my 18th birthday. I dragged it off the bookcase again to reread a couple of weeks ago, after the RV discussion on cats in books.
It's very short, the story of a ginger cat with an indomitable spirit, who loses one foreleg completely and most of the use of the other in an accident at an early age and yet goes on against these odds to lead a fulfilled and happy life.

Cold Mountain
Edie on Cold Mountain

Excellent.

Another one that's been in the TBR bookcase for a few years. I loved the movie, and am enjoying the book so far - Frazier has a very elegant way with words. I do dislike speech that's only marked with a dash at the beginning of the line, though, like:
- it's a sunny day, she said.

The Game (Firebird)
Edie on The Game (Firebird)

The usual fun from DWJ, aimed at younger readers.

Can I just say here how much I hate, hate, hate thinking I've got 20+ pages of a book to read, wondering how the author's going to fill them out, because it's looking like the dénouement is already here - and then finding that the 20+ pages are filled with appendices of some nature or other. Even though I've generally flicked through the last few pages to see exactly where the book ends, I always, always forget that there's that much extraneous stuff.

The Game (Firebird)
Edie on The Game (Firebird)

DWJ has been one of my favourite authors For. Ever. She is the author who introduced me to fantasy. I don't have all of her books, yet, but I'm working on it :)

Hotel Du Lac
Edie on Hotel Du Lac

Not sure what I thought of this - an enjoyable character study, in many ways, but it didn't really knock my socks off.

Holes
Edie on Holes

I first heard of this on RV, of course :) and picked up a copy from Bookswapper a while ago. Immensely enjoyable and a fast read so far

Cat on the Scent (Mrs. Murphy Mysteries)
Edie on Cat on the Scent (Mrs. Murphy Mysteries)

I told you it was a binge... five to go after this one!

Cats in the Belfry
Edie on Cats in the Belfry

I dragged this out for a reread after Kat Warren started the discussion about cats in books at RV. This must be the first time I've read it in over 20 years. Sweet and absolutely laugh-out-loud funny.

Murder on the Prowl
Edie on Murder on the Prowl

and yet more...

Lean Mean Thirteen (Stephanie Plum, No. 13)
Edie on Lean Mean Thirteen (Stephanie Plum, No. 13)

Picked this up at JFK after I left the book I'd planned to read in my suitcase. Classic Stephanie Plum.

Murder, She Meowed (Mrs. Murphy Mysteries)
Edie on Murder, She Meowed (Mrs. Murphy Mysteries)

and yet more Mrs M...

Pay Dirt (Mrs. Murphy Mysteries)
Edie on Pay Dirt (Mrs. Murphy Mysteries)

More Crozet coziness...

Murder at Monticello (Mrs. Murphy Mysteries)
Edie on Murder at Monticello (Mrs. Murphy Mysteries)

The Mrs Murphy binge continues...

To Kill a Mockingbird
Edie on To Kill a Mockingbird

I first read this at school around 30 years ago, and I think I've seen the movie at least once, but I didn't have any great memories about what it was about, apart from the court case. It was a lot funnier than I remembered it being, but also very moving.

Anansi Boys
Edie on Anansi Boys

Hmmm... not sure what I thought of this. It wasn't as dark as American Gods, but not overwhelmingly funny either. Not the best Gaiman, but good.

The Last Jew
Edie on The Last Jew

I rescued this from my mum's books that were headed to the Oxfam shop, so it'd been sitting in my TBR case at least four years if not longer. Not great literature, but not bad.

Claws and Effect
Edie on Claws and Effect

They're utter nonsense, but I do confess to being a fan of the Mrs Murphy series. This was the start of this year's binge...

Speaker for the Dead (Ender, Book 2)
Edie on Speaker for the Dead (Ender, Book 2)

Good. I liked this and "Xenocide" better than "Ender's Game" I think.

Ender's Game (Ender, Book 1)
Edie on Ender's Game (Ender, Book 1)

I first read this for the YARG discussion in 2003, and reread it this year in preparation for finally reading the two following books which had been sitting in my TBR bookcase for ages. Not bad, but twice is enough, so I think it can go in the "to-be-swapped" stack now.
