I'm about half way through this 800 and change page book. I am enjoying it, although it does take some patience to read. The pace is sometimes a bit slow, but this usually affords some relaxing time of humor and back story. The world of Norrell and Strange is very fun to read about, as is its history. Though it's a bit slow going, I know I'll finish it and look forward to the supposed next book being written.

Dissenting voice on this one. It's not a bad book but it's certainly not worth the time it takes to read 700+ pages. I wish I had that time back in my reading bank.

about 2 years agoI admit when I first saw this book I was reluctant to read it - not because of the subject. I like books about magic and history, but because of the size. From the beginning, however, Clarke's writing pulled me into this world in which magic is studied and practiced, used and misunderstood. I especially liked the interactions between Norrell and Strange and the ones between the servant Stephen Black and the faery gentleman with the thistle-down hair.
