I'm not a big reader of historical fiction but I liked Mantel's interpretaion of this (though one small quibble, the pronouns are sometimes confusing). Quite a different portrait of Cromwell (and More also). I've been watching The Tudors, now in its last season, which was both a help and a hindrance. I'll look forward to the sequel.

So much praise for this one, I have to come to the party.

Another look @ Henry VIII and his Cromwell. The Tudors are back on TV and this won Man Booker!
Wow, really well done. It took a lot of close reading, and I have to say I was very glad for the Kindle's search function with this one. But the rewards for that were huge. Her writing is so spare, very physical, and she makes the small details matter so much -- aside from being a really solid historical novel, it was a terrific, nuanced portrait of a man. The Booker people got it right this time. Mantel did a hell of a job.
8 months agoI've not been this excited about beginning a book in ages. I've had it around the house for about a week, just enjoying the prospect of starting it.
9 months agoJust, just started. Need to finish another book before I am too committed to this one but am planning to read it through compulsively as soon as I can.
12 months agoThis was very very fine. Mantel is so good at the atmospheric detail. It manages to feel both historically true and very modern at the same time.
