This book is a masterpiece, as NancyS said, and an absolute pleasure to read as well. It's more accessible than Plowing the Dark, which I still think is Powers's finest work.

This was my favorite novel of 2004. (Powers was also my fave in 2006 for "The Echo Maker.") Wonderful saga about a biracial family in the 1960s, civil rights, music, singing, and siblings. A masterpiece.
